UNISA LLB Requirements 2026

About the UNISA LLB Degree

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at UNISA is a four-year professional degree that qualifies graduates to enter the legal profession in South Africa. It is one of the most enrolled law programmes in the country, with thousands of students working toward becoming attorneys, advocates, magistrates, prosecutors, and corporate legal advisors through distance learning.

The LLB is offered through UNISA's College of Law (CLAW) and consists of 480 credits across four academic levels. The qualification covers all foundational areas of South African law including constitutional law, criminal law, civil procedure, commercial law, labour law, international law, and jurisprudence. Upon completion, graduates can proceed to serve articles of clerkship (for attorneys) or pupillage (for advocates) and write the relevant board examinations.

Studying law through distance learning at UNISA requires strong discipline and excellent reading and writing skills. Law modules involve substantial reading — case law, legislation, legal textbooks, and academic journals — as well as extensive written assignments and examinations. The reward, however, is a highly respected professional qualification that opens doors to one of South Africa's most established professions.

LLB Admission Requirements

Direct Entry (from Matric)

  • NSC with bachelor's degree admission
  • Minimum APS: 28 points (excluding Life Orientation)
  • English: Level 5 (60-69%) in English Home Language or First Additional Language
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy: No specific requirement, but strong analytical skills are essential
  • Other languages: An additional language at Level 4 (50-59%) is recommended

Entry via Prior Degree

Students who already hold an undergraduate degree (BA, BCom, etc.) may apply for the LLB as a second degree. This may allow for some module credits to be transferred, potentially shortening the LLB duration. Contact the College of Law for evaluation of your prior qualifications.

Entry via Diploma or Higher Certificate

UNISA offers a Diploma in Law and Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies. Graduates of these programmes may articulate into the LLB, though additional bridging modules may be required.

āš ļø Important: The LLB has higher admission requirements than most UNISA programmes. An APS of 28+ and English Level 5 are firm requirements. If you do not meet these, consider starting with the Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies as a pathway.

LLB Curriculum Overview

First Year

Introduction to Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Legal History, Private Law foundations, and Academic Literacy. These modules establish your understanding of the South African legal system, legal reasoning, and fundamental legal concepts.

Second Year

Law of Contract, Law of Delict, Family Law, Interpretation of Statutes, Civil Procedure, and elective modules. You begin to engage with substantive areas of law and develop skills in legal analysis and case interpretation.

Third Year

Property Law, Commercial Law, Company Law, Labour Law, Administrative Law, and Criminal Procedure. Modules become more specialised and demanding, requiring integration of knowledge from earlier years.

Fourth Year

Law of Evidence, International Law, Jurisprudence, Tax Law, and elective modules in specialised areas such as Human Rights Law, Environmental Law, or Intellectual Property Law. The fourth year also includes a research component in some modules.

The LLB is a demanding programme — most modules require reading 500+ pages of prescribed material per semester, plus case law and additional readings. Plan your study load carefully using our Study Load Calculator.

Career Paths After the UNISA LLB

An LLB from UNISA opens the door to numerous legal and related careers:

Attorney

After completing the LLB, serve 2 years of articles of clerkship (or 1 year if you have a prior degree), pass the Attorneys' Admission Examination, and be admitted by the High Court. Attorneys advise clients, draft legal documents, and represent clients in lower courts and (with right of appearance) in higher courts.

Advocate

Complete the LLB, undergo pupillage at the Bar for 12 months, pass the Bar examination, and be admitted as an advocate. Advocates specialise in courtroom advocacy and opinion work, primarily in the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal, and Constitutional Court.

Prosecutor

Join the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) as a state prosecutor. Prosecutors represent the state in criminal matters. Entry-level positions require an LLB degree.

Corporate Legal Advisor

Work in-house at corporations providing legal advice on contracts, compliance, employment law, and regulatory matters. Many large companies have legal departments staffed by admitted attorneys.

Magistrate or Judge

After substantial legal practice experience, qualified legal practitioners may be appointed as magistrates or judges. This is a senior career path that typically requires 5-15+ years of practice.

Other Legal Careers

  • Legal researcher or academic
  • Human rights lawyer (at NGOs like Legal Aid SA, Section27, etc.)
  • Conveyancer (property law specialist)
  • Notary public
  • Labour law consultant
  • Compliance officer
  • Government legal advisor
